چکیده

Many NextGen technologies and concepts, when implemented, will change the underlying stochastic nature of flight tracks. This paper investigates how changes in the stochastic variability of flight tracks have the potential to impact the probability of potential wake encounters. We investigate these relationships for a single runway and for parallel runways. The results show that the mean and standard deviation of separation, and the vertical standard deviation are the key parameters affecting potential wake encounters. In the parallel-runway scenario, effects of crosswind and runway spacing are studied. A full factorial design is conducted to estimate the impact of parameters and their interactions, with dominating factors identified. In some cases, results can be different even for the same parameter when different circulation thresholds are used for defining wakes. Outputs from different wake models (TDAWP vs. D2P) are compared. The overall objective is to assess the sensitivity of these results to parameters of the stochastic input distributions. Keywords—wake vortices; simulation; sensitivy analysis

Probabilistic Analysis of Wake Vortex Hazards for Landing Aircraft Using Multilateration Data

Wake vortices are a safety hazard to landing aircraft. A landing aircraft that encounters a wake may roll, resulting in a fatal crash if the roll is severe enough and/or if the aircraft is low enough to the ground. Therefore, aircraft are separated by a sufficient distance to ensure that wakes have time to decay in strength. However, because of the inherent variability in wake behavior and airc...

Trailing Vortex Wake Encounters at Altitude - A Potential Flight Safety Issue?

The potential hazard of one aircraft encountering the trailing vortex wake of another aircraft during either take-off or landing is well known. The wake vortex hazard in the terminal area has been virtually eliminated using the operational procedures and aircraft separation criteria mandated by the air traffic authorities. This paper presents arguments that wake encounters at cruise altitude ar...

The Trailing Vortex Wake Hazard: Beyond the Takeoff and Landing Corridors

This paper focuses on issues related to the trailing vortex wake hazard beyond the takeoff and landing corridors. The operational procedures adopted by the FAA in the 1970s for avoiding wake turbulence encounters in the take-off and landing corridors have been very successful in providing commercial aviation with a high degree of safety. However, there is a growing body of evidence that encount...

Investigation of the Influences of Track Superstructure Parameters on Ballasted Railway Track Design

The main design criteria of ballasted railway tracks include rail deflections, rail bending stresses, rail wheel contact stresses, sleeper bending moments and ballast sleeper contact pressures. Numerous criteria have been defined for the design of ballasted railway tracks owing to the various mechanical properties of track components and their complex interaction. Therefore, railway track desig...

An Integrated Loads Analysis Model for Wake Vortex Encounters

When a plane crosses the wake generated by a preceding aircraft, large dynamical loads in the order of the design loads may be induced. Loads analysis models for such wake vortex encounters need to consider aspects important for manoeuvre, as well as gust type responses. If the angle between the path and the trailing vortices is small, the encounter is manoeuvre like due to large induced roll m...
